Why Choose Emma Maaranen and Focus Bodywork For Your Massage Needs?

I address not only pain, but the underlying structural problems that cause misuse of your of the body and perpetuate injuries. I help clients learn to use their bodies in a more natural and effective way and bring awareness to movement patterns that are not optimal.

No matter what your lifestyle, injuries occur frequently and can be a hinderance on everyday life. I can speed recovery from overexertion whether it be from painting the kitchen or running the Wasatch One Hundred. When injuries are present, I work with my clients’ medical team (Physical Therapists, Sports Medicine Physicians, Orthopedics, etc.) to enhance healing for a more complete recovery, often in less time.

Focus Bodywork Therapeutic Massage Sessions

All massage sessions begin by discussing goals, assessing discomfort or injury and evaluating movement patterns. Each session is specifically tailored to the client’s personal needs. To elicit the most effective response, I use a combination of techniques such as neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, manual lymphatic drainage and sports massage. I continue to further my education in these and other related massage techniques by regularly participating in bodywork seminars.

Neuromuscular Therapy

addresses tender spots (trigger points) in abused muscles that refer pain and often cause pain-spasm-pain patterns. Without treatment, trigger points can compress nerves and restrict blood flow leading to postural compensation and decreased mobility.

Myofascial Release

is a gentle stretching massage technique that frees connective tissues. Muscles are encased in fibrous sheets called fascia that create webs throughout the body. When overused or injured, fascia becomes taunt, like a pull in a sweater, which irritate muscles and cause adhesions.

Sports Massage

is a monitoring system to help you become aware of overworked and underdeveloped muscles through assessment, deep tissue massage and stretching.

Manual lymphatic Drainage

(MLD) is a light, rhythmical massage that aims to move lymph. Lymph delivers nutrients and immune constituents to tissue while toxins and cellular debris are removed. When there is an injury, lymph can become static, causing excessive swelling and slowing the healing process. MLD stimulates the lymphatic system, reducing swelling and speeding up recovery from sprains, strains and other sports injuries.
